One of my favorite TV shows in Little House on the Prairie, which Michael and I have been watching on DVD over the last several months. I really didn't go in expecting to enjoy it as much as I have, but I have in fact loved it.
Did you know that the little boy who plays Willie Olsen, one of Laura Ingalls constant enemies, is in fact brother to Melissa Gilbert who plays Laura Ingalls herself? I thought that was pretty cool.
We're only in Season 3 right now, and are at a distinct disadvantage knowing what we do about Mary Ingalls. We keep expecting to see the episode in which it happens, and there are so many serious things that happen to Mary or the other children that we are kept in constant suspense.

I love this show, but haven't watched it in many years. Lyndal will spend about 6 weeks studying the Pioneers this year and I've been planning on us watching some of these during that time.
I tried reading the first book in the series to Joey once, and it was as slow-moving as molasses. It seemed to be a diary of how they lived and functioned on the prairie, including how to smoke a hog, but no plot line at all. The TV show was pretty exciting, at least the way I remember it so many years ago. I should check the library for the videos--I bet my kids would like them.
I simply wanted to add another sentence to my response, which I don't even remember now. I didn't realize that it would show I'd deleted a comment.
I haven't looked at the books in a very long time, although I know I read most of them when I was younger.
Let me just caution you about the series. It's wonderful, but sometimes violent. There is an episode in the first season in which a man blows himself up while working on the railroad. Many of the episodes are about serious suffering, dangerous illnesses, death. Almost every one of them makes me cry for some reason or another. If any of your children are particularly sensitive you'll want to proceed with caution.
It's a good series for discussion.
Love Little House! Ah, the memories! Does that make us old? Surely not!
