(Note: Since I'm writing to a mixed audience, I don't intend to make breastfeeding a common topic of discussion, even though it remains an important issue in my life. However, occasionally questions need to be asked.)
Parker is almost 14 months old now, and as such, he is able to drink cow's milk in place of breast milk or formula. It has only been in the last couple of days that he has shown much interest in drinking milk through a straw.
So here's my question:
How much milk would he be drinking if he were getting all of his daily milk from a cup?
This becomes a crucial question as the price of milk increases, and Parker and I get closer and closer to a semi-total wean.

This is a great question for your doc. According to Parker's age there is a set amount that he should be getting. They don't want them going under that amount for calorie purposes and they don't want them going over that amount because they fill up on milk instead of food. I would ask your doc.
That is very sound advice, Tina, and it reminds me that it is time to make Parker's appointment for his fifteen month checkup. I would have been pretty upset a month from now otherwise. I'll try and get that call made today. Thanks.
I called the pediatricians office at Tina's suggestion and this is what the nurse who called me back said:
If I'm nursing Parker on demand, he can have 24 to 32 additional ounces of milk from a cup.
I did not manage to ask her how much he should be drinking were he not breastfeeding. I find I'm not very good at talking to medical personel. My next step will be either to wait to talk to Dr. Brown about it at our next visit, and/or hit the message boards at babycenter.com.
